Social Studies National Honor Society (Rho Kappa)

The Belen chapter of the Rho Kappa National Social Studies Honor Society recognizes juniors and seniors that excel in the field of Social Studies. Members demonstrate a passion for history, government and civics, strive to be exemplary citizens, and display a keen interest in the area of civic duty. To qualify for membership, the student must meet the following criteria:
  • Be a junior or senior
  • Have a minimum unweighted cumulative GPA of 3.5
  • Earned a final grade of A in the prior year's Honors or AP Social Studies course (elective or core) and a grade of 1 in Effort and Conduct
  • Be currently enrolled in an Honors or AP Social Studies course (elective or core)
  • Social Studies Departmental approval

To remain a member, a student must:
  • Maintain a minimum unweighted cumulative GPA of 3.5 in the current year
  • Earn a grade of A in each semester of their Honors or AP Social Studies course and a grade of 1 in Effort and Conduct
  • Attend Rho Kappa meetings and Rho Kappa sponsored activities 
  • Participate in one Rho Kappa Civics Project per year

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow.  Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
