On May 1, the excitement on campus was palpable as students and employees welcomed César R. Conde '91, Chairman of NBCUniversal News Group, and Tom Llamas ‘97, recently named Anchor and Managing Editor of “NBC Nightly News,” to Belen Jesuit for a special assembly.
The conversation was moderated by their former teacher and coach, Patrick Collins, in the Sarría Family Dining Hall. Speaking to the student body, faculty and staff about their role in the media, their journey to get where they are, and the importance of the lessons learned at Belen, they inspired our Wolverines with their stories and advice.
“It is such a blessing that these two titans of journalism and media chose Belen Jesuit, their middle and high school, as the first place to visit and speak, said School President Fr. Guillermo M. García-Tuñón, S.J. '87. “To expose our students to such grateful and successful alumni is important. Our current students need to see how living your life for the greater glory of God and as a man for others is a recipe for true success.”
Following the presentation, Mr. Conde and Mr. Llamas visited the Conde Media Center and joined a production of WBLN. Click here to watch the special newscast. Click here to see the photo album.
Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain. The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline. In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty. The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow. Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
