Major Gift Announcement: José M. González '91 and Family

Teresa Martinez | Director of Communications
Belen Jesuit is excited to announce that José M. González '91 and his family have pledged a major gift towards fulfilling the goals outlined in the 2022 Strategic Plan.

“We are immensely grateful to José and his family who have given so generously to Belen Jesuit,” said Fr. Willie ‘87. “I’ve known José for a long time and his generosity goes back decades not only with his treasure, but also with his time. He has been a steadfast supporter of our alma mater and a wonderful example of what it means to be a man for others.”

In 2022, José was named Alumnus of the Year. This award is given to the alumnus who best demonstrates dedicated service to Belen Jesuit, lives a life of moral virtue, and is a leader spiritually, ethically, and financially for the betterment of his alma mater and community.

“Belen taught me how to be a critical, independent thinker,” said José. “Belen helped me think on my feet and figure out solutions. That skill set has helped me in my career and in life in general. Additionally, the brotherhood that comes from a Jesuit education is unparalleled. We are blessed to be part of this community and help support my alma mater that I love.”

José has been married to Cary for 27 years. They have three children: Allison, José, who graduated in 2021 and Armando, who is currently a senior. Their daughter Allison graduated from Our Lady of Lourdes Academy in 2018 and University of Michigan in 2022, currently she is completing her graduate work at Columbia University. Their oldest son, José Jr., is currently a junior at the University of Miami and their youngest son Armando, will attend Boston College in the fall.

José’s gift will help fund the Roberto Suris Athletic Center as well as an endowed scholarship dedicated to former Belen teacher and spiritual director Fr. Oscar Méndez, S.J. “ The long-lasting impression Fr. Mendez left on his students and me personally was immeasurable,” said José.

We continue striving for greatness and need your help to achieve our goal. If you would like to contribute to the school's vision, please contact Phil Fernández ’94 at ffernandez@belenjesuit.org or 305-804-7683.

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow.  Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
