National English Honor Society

The National English Honor Society (NEHS) at Belen Jesuit is a chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, which offers recognition to students who have excelled in the area of English with the aim of fostering a love and appreciation of literature, language, and writing. To qualify for membership, the student must meet the following criteria:
  • Be a junior or senior
  • A minimum unweighted cumulative GPA of 3.5
  • Be enrolled in the Honors or AP English course in the candidate’s grade level and earn a grade of 90% or higher in each semester of their Honors English course or 87% or higher in their AP English course
  • No grade lower than a 1 in conduct and effort in an advanced English course
  • Approval from the English Department

To remain a member, a student must:
  • Maintain a minimum unweighted cumulative GPA of 3.5
  • Maintain a minimum grade of 90% in each semester of their Honors English course or of 87% in each semester of their AP English course
  • Maintain a grade of 1 in conduct and effort in the student’s advanced English course for the year
  • Attend NEHS meetings and NEHS sponsored activities 
  • Complete required service hours as a peer assistant in the English lab

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow.  Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
