ICA Fall Season in Full Swing

Teresa Martinez | Communications Director
The fall season at the Ignatian Center of the Arts is up and running. “Each year we are challenged to find new ways to highlight our amazing facility and offer interesting exhibits, wonderful concerts, and entertaining theater productions,” said Director of the Ignatian Center for the Arts Luis Dulzaides. “We have a great season ahead, and I’m excited to be able to offer such tremendous opportunities for the Belen community to enjoy.”

Kicking off the season is an exceptional gallery exhibit, featuring Cuban-American Artist J. Roberto, titled "Capillas de mis Recuerdos." It began in early September. Roberto's work features a twist on religious icons and imagery using pop art and vibrant colors have been a great way to showcase not only his amazing work but also bring the mission of the Olga & Carlos Saladrigas Gallery to a new and contemporary community.  The exhibit will be open from 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. during the week until October 7. The majority of the artwork is for sale and proceeds will benefit the Ignatian Center.

The Belen Jesuit Strings Orchestra held the first Concert Gallery Series of the school year on September 26. The musicians were led by their teacher Maestra Ana Ruth Bermudez. Click here to see pictures from the event.

On October 12, the Roca Theater will host Grammy Award-winning artist Willy Chirino and his daughters for an acoustic concert.  Click here to purchase tickets.

The Belen Jesuit Bands will take the stage in our Amphitheater on November 1 for their annual Fall Concert.  “This is a great event for the whole family,” said Dulzaides. “This year the concert will feature the music from movie soundtracks.” The event will also feature a costume contest, food and great music all under the direction of our Band Director Maestra Marlene Urbay.

The Belen Thespians will take a turn shining on the Roca Stage when they star in the ICA production of "12 Angry Jurors" November 7-9. The play will be directed by Mr. Francisco Padura who takes one of the most iconic Broadway plays and gives it a modern twist. Tickets are $12 pre-sale or $15 at the door.

The Saladrigas Gallery will host the second exhibit starting in mid-October titled "Encounters." "Encounters" is a collective show featuring nine Cuban American artists. Sculptures and paintings will be on display to expose our students and the Belen community as a whole to a vibrant and compelling exhibit.

We will close out our busy fall season with the Belen Jesuit Bands Christmas Concert on December 7.  This is an opportunity for our musicians in the band classes to showcase their talents. There will be two performances: 4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Tickets pre-sale are $12 and at the door $15.

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow.  Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
