Speech and Debate team win

On February 4, the Belen Jesuit Speech and Debate team competed at the Florida Forensics Art Deco Regional Tournament.
The tournament brought together over 20 schools from all over Miami Dade County. Over 350 Students competed to be able to claim a spot at the State Tournament in March.
 
The team was able to capture two Regional Championships in Congressional Debate and Public Forum debate. Belen Jesuit's Regional Champion in Congressional Debate was senior Kevin Lemus. Regional champions in Public Forum were Senior Nicolas Munoz and Freshman Kevin Bjorkman. The team captured spots to the state tournament in all three events it entered.

  • Christopher Alvarez --9th grade
  • Kevin Valido--9th
Domestic Extemporaneous Speaking:
  • Kyle Rodriguez--8th grade
  • Javier Bustamante --11th grade
  • Felipe Pardo --11th grade
  • Alexander Blanco--9th grade
Placing as alternates to the State Tournament in Public Forum:
  • Andres Alfonso and Orlando Galindez
  • Esteban Guio and Roberto Pupo
The team continues to improve with each tournament and they continue to show a tremendous amount of dedication and determination to be better than the last tournament. The team now gets ready for the National Qualifier February 11-12.

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow.  Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
