Rowing Season Kicks-off

Ian O'Flaherty | Belen Crew Booster Club
The Belen Jesuit Crew team participated in Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston on October 21 and 22.

The HOCR welcomes the world’s best crew teams to the bank of the Charles River for the ultimate two-day rowing competition. The weekend began with a prayer service, and was followed by breakfast, hosted by BC High, for all Jesuit high schools participating in the race.

On race day, our Youth 8 boat was a solid contender in an open weight category that attracted high school teams from as far as England and the US West Coast. Cheered on by a solid contingent of families, friends, and alumni, most of whom are attending the region’s prestigious institutions, the team had its 2nd best showing, placing 17th in a field of 85. The team did however have the fastest time among all Jesuit high schools which allowed them to claim, for the first time ever, the Jesuit Challenge Cup.

Next up, the team will compete in the Head of the Hooch in Chattanooga, TN on November 4 and 5.

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow.  Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
