Powerful messages delivered to students

Teresa Gutierrez | Director of School Counseling
Red Ribbon Week was celebrated on campus the week of November 6th.  Students listened to guest speakers on November 8 who delivered both a powerful and inspirational talk.
In the high school, Mercy Fowler, Counselor from Terra High school and mom of alumnus Christian Fowler, class of 2015, shared her story of being in a car crash at the age of 21. The accident was caused by the driver of the vehicle she was in being drunk. She was paralyzed from the accident. Her story is inspirational and offers hope, but gave a strong message about drinking and driving.

The middle school students heard a presentation by Joshua Joseph, Mental Health Clinician and Dr. Jared Kiddoe, child and adolescent psychiatrist, both from South Florida Integrative Medicine. They spoke about the dangers of smoking and vaping and e cigarettes. They provided the physical and mental problems associated with their use and alternative coping techniques.

The goal of this week is to raise awareness about the risks of alcohol and drug abuse and promote healthier life choices among our students.

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow.  Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
