The Legacy Continues

Ian O'Flaherty | Belen Crew Booster Club
The Crew Freshman and Middle School teams participated in the 2018 Novice Regatta in Turkey Lake at Bill Frederick Park in Orlando on February 3.
Belen Jesuit had 8 entries in the regatta.

The Novice Regatta is the first regatta of the season and welcomes middle school and novice high school rowers to gain experience for spring racing. Over 30 teams attend every year, making it a highly competitive experience for first-time rowers

For the first time in two years, the Freshman 8 won the Fastest Men's Freshman 8 trophy for Belen as the fastest boat in the Regatta, beating all other novice high school rowers.

After lost time at the start, the Middle School boat was pushed to their limits to make up a deficit and managed to end with a bronze medal.

In the medal count, the freshmen team came home with 2 gold, 1 silver, and 2 bronze. The middle school team also had a great outing bringing home 2 gold and 1 bronze.

Congratulations to all the rowers for a job well done, and thank you to Coach Yasser, Coach Randy, and Coach Rolando for the love and dedication to our athletes and the sport.  Looks like Belen Jesuit Crew is in good shape for the next generation.

Next up, the varsity team will compete in the American Youth Cup Series on February 17 and the middle school team will compete in the Sarasota Invitations on February 23.

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow.  Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
