Dad’s Mass and Prayer Breakfast

Erik M. Vieira | Pastoral Administrator, ACU
On September 14, the Agrupación Católica Universitaria (ACU) hosted a breakfast for the Belen fathers at Belen Jesuit following the 7:15 a.m. daily mass in the Chapel of Our Lady. We thank all the Belen fathers that took the time to attend the event; it was an excellent turnout with over 100 men attending. The mass had a larger turnout as many of the men were accompanied by their sons.

This event was an excellent opportunity to begin the day with the Eucharist and spend time in community. After celebrating mass, Fr. Willie ‘87 led the breakfast with an inspiring conversation on living our faith in the world, particularly considering the adversities presently facing our Church. He challenged the men to live holy lives: “Our Church needs men of faith.” The challenge stems from our baptism, when we are anointed priest, prophet and king. Fulfilling this challenge requires our faith to manifest itself as a personal commitment to the person of Jesus Christ, the foundation of our faith.

The men of the ACU, some being Belen fathers and many Belen alumni, strive to fulfill this challenge and live out the call to holiness. This desire to be a signpost of holiness in the world was the purpose for which Fr. Felipe Rey de Castro, the ACU’s founder, brought together a handful of Belen alumnus in Cuba, challenging them to deepen their relationship with Lord and set the example of holiness in their day-to-day lives; in their friendships, their families, and their careers.

Father Willie and the community of Belen are committed to instilling the faith in your sons and facilitating their personal encounter with the person of Jesus Christ. As fathers, we have the unique opportunity to affirm and deepen the values taught at Belen. We must make time to deepen our personal relationship with the Lord, whether through regular attendance at mass, daily prayer and reflection, or even listening to a daily reflection. Additionally, we must find time to share that personal relationship with each other and our sons.

Belen and the ACU hope that the monthly prayer breakfast serves as an opportunity to foster the community of faith at Belen and facilitate the personal encounter with our Lord. We look forward to hosting the event next month, scheduled for Friday, October 12. For more information on the ACU please contact me at evieira@estovir.org or visit www.estovir.org. Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow.  Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
