Ordination of Julio Minsal-Ruiz, SJ
Belen Jesuit Preparatory School alumnus Julio Minsal-Ruiz, S.J. will be ordained to the priesthood on Saturday, January 11 at 10:30 a.m. at Gesu Catholic Church in downtown Miami.
The main celebrant and homilist will be Archbishop of Miami Thomas Wenski, concelebrated by Father Javier Vidal, SJ, Provincial of the Antilles, and other Jesuits as well as priests from the Archdiocese. Over 50 priests are expected to be in attendance from various parts of the world, including Canada and the Holy Land.
Gesu Catholic Church is located at 118 NE 2nd Street in Miami.
Minsal-Ruiz, 32, was born and raised in Miami and graduated from Belen in 2005. He graduated from Xavier University in 2009 with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy. Next, he attended Fordham University and graduated with a Master of Arts in Philosophical Resources in 2013. He entered the Society of Jesus in 2009 and began his formation as a Jesuit in the novitiate in Santiago, Dominican Republic.
“The call to serve others as a priest comes because of schools like this one which unites people across different subjects in a desire to live from this law of the gift,” said Deacon Minsal-Ruiz. “Community service, good sportsmanship, excellence in education, rootedness in faith are all virtues taught at Belen and they are all expression of the law of the gift. All of these virtues I learned from the teachers, coaches, counselors, and priests who taught with their lives the mysterious power of this profound truth.”
During the Mass, the Archbishop will ordain Minsal-Ruiz by the imposition of hands and prayer of consecration. All priest concelebrants will later lay their hands on Minsal-Ruiz thereby handing down their priestly rank.

Since August 2019, Minsal-Ruiz has been working as a theology teacher at his alma mater Belen Jesuit and will continue to work at the school after his ordination. Jesuit Father Minsal-Ruiz will celebrate his first Mass on Sunday, January 12 at 9:00 a.m. at St. John Neumann Catholic Church in Miami.

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain. The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline. In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty. The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow. Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
