New Strategic Plan Debuts
On July 31st, the feast of St. Ignatius of Loyola, we officially closed the 60th-anniversary celebration of Belen Jesuit in Miami but our history is much older than that. For 168 years, we have been blessed with the opportunity to further the mission of educating young men in the Jesuit tradition. Our rich history is filled with the presence of the Holy Spirit, who has guided and protected us every step of the way. Much has changed throughout those years, and Belen has changed along with it. But, one thing remains absolutely the same, our Catholic-Jesuit identity.
After many months of hard work, I introduce to you our new Strategic Plan. It is important for all of us to have access to this document which outlines the vision for our future. This document also helps me as President to evaluate what we are doing and where we need to continue to improve. In addition, it gives clarity to all current and future members of the school community about what we are all about. I thank all the individuals from all sectors of the Belen community who worked so hard to put this together. It is my prayer that it only continues to build on the beauty of our past and the enthusiasm for our future.
The plan identifies five pillars – Enhancing our Catholic, Jesuit Ethos / Academic Excellence, Critical Thinking & Innovation / Formation and Care of the Whole Person / Beyond Belen / Ignite the Belen Jesuit Community — which will serve as our roadmap. Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain. The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline. In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty. The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow. Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
