To the Band of Brothers: June 9, 2023

Fr. Willie, S.J. ‘87 | President
The end of the school year has arrived. It has been a great one and I am grateful to so many people who have worked so hard to make it such a success. The class of 2023 has moved on to other pastures to begin a new chapter in their lives. Mr. Roca often says the school year goes as the senior class goes. Well, it was a great senior class, so… it was a great academic year.

As you all head off to your summer break, I am sure you are excited about what the next few months have in store. Many of you have plans to sleep, go to camp, travel, fish, golf, etc. All of it is well deserved. Be sure to take the time to do all of those things and never let a moment go to waste. Just remember, not doing much but resting and getting a little extra sleep can mean a lot.

I do want to give you a homework assignment this summer. Don’t worry, it is not tedious, nor is it going to burden you in any way. As a matter of fact, I want to ask your parents in particular to do this assignment as well. They may even want to do it for themselves first and then decide if you should do it.

A short while ago, I watched a documentary on iTunes that I would like you to watch. It’s called “Pray: The Story of Patrick Peyton.” I’ve included the link for the movie here. It’s not very long, but I assure you it is well worth it. I really think you should watch it with your parents. It’s a great opportunity to do something together with them. I won’t give too many details but will let you know that what the documentary speaks about is more pertinent now than it ever was before. I can tell you this; the power of prayer, the power of faith, the power of the rosary, and the power of a tradition are so rich and practical that they can change lives, move mountains, and transform the world.

I really hope you watch it and let me know what you think.

Have a wonderful summer and know we will be working very hard over the break to get things ready for the new academic year. I look forward to seeing all of you again. I want you to know the summer will be filled with prayers offered by me and many others for all of you. Wherever you are and whatever you are doing, know there will be prayers being said at Mass and with the rosary for you and your family. Never forget Jesus and his Blessed Mother. You may be taking a break from school, but there is no break from God.

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow.  Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
