Support Bym, Help Make A Difference

Mirna Menendez | BYM Coordinator
This summer, sixty members of the class of 2025 will work side-by-side with the villagers of La Colonia in the Dominican Republic to build an aqueduct for their community. From June 26 to July 4, this group will work in the hot sun to be able to provide water for not only the people of La Colonia, but for the neighboring village of La Yuca. In all, approximately 200 families will benefit from this project.

Each participant has been tasked with fundraising at least $1,000 in order to reach our fundraising goal of $60,000 to successfully complete our mission of serving the communities in the Dominican Republic. As the old adage goes, it takes a village and we need your help to reach this goal. Click here if you want to contribute.

The group of over sixty from Belen, including chaperones, will work diligently to lay down 4.5 miles of pipe, which will replace the existing aqueduct, which is over 40 years old. The new system will include two water tanks with the capacity to hold 20,000 gallons of water and hydroelectric power.

We look forward to a fruitful mission trip during which our young men will benefit from their labor, as well as from living the Magis and growing spiritually.

The power of prayer is incredibly important during the trip and beforehand. The Belen community is asked to keep the missionaries in their prayers. The group will gather for a Commissioning Mass on Tuesday, June 25, at 7 p.m. at the Our Lady of Belen Chapel before setting off on their journey.

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow.  Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
