News from the Ignatian Center for the Arts

Luis Dulzaides | Director of the Ignatian Center for the Arts
While the majority of the focus of the Ignatian Center for the Arts is placed on the productions for the Roca Theater and the Saladrigas Gallery, our students have been busy all year working on taking their talents outside of our center.
The weekend of February 10-12, our thespians in the Junior Thespian Troupe will be competing at the 2017 State Festival.  Under the direction of their moderator Mr. Padura, our students will join thousands of other young thespians in Orlando to compete in a variety of different events.  Please join me in wishing them well.

On the weekend of February 24th, our very own Belen Jesuit Drumline will be competing at the South Miami Dade Cultural Arts Center Drumline Drum-Off.  Under the direction of Ruben Jimenez, our young men will compete against drumlines from all over South Florida.  This is the first year that our drumline has been invited and they are excited to showcase their talents to the entire community.

The next big event at the Roca Theater will showcase the talents of our thespians in the Spring musical titled A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.  For the first time we will have a performance after school to open the production.  This will take place on March 2nd at 3:30 pm.  Our thespians have been rehearsing since December and are eager to perform for the Belen community.  Other show times include: March 3 and 4 at 7:30 p.m., March 5 at 3 p.m., March 9-11 at 7:30 p.m. and March 12 at 3 p.m. The tickets are General Admission and the price for all performances is $20.00. Tickets can be purchased on-line, http://seatyourself.biz/belenjesuit or in the ICA Office.

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow.  Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
