Thank You Mariano

Antonio C. Castro '86 | Alumni Association President
There are few who have done as much for the Alumni Association as Mariano Loret de Mola ‘58.
In the spirit of Fr. Dorta-Duque, S.J. ’40, Mariano has devoted himself for the last seven years to promoting our beloved Alumni Association as Executive Director.

But Mariano has been much more than Executive Director of our Alumni Association.  A proud Camagüeyano, Mariano graduated from Belen in 1958.  While at Belen, he was an avid athlete in baseball, track & field, swimming and basketball (yes, basketball!).  Mariano later returned to Belen to serve as Assistant Principal and also the first Athletic Director in Miami.  Mariano coached the basketball and baseball teams to conference, district and regional successes; and in 2008, he was inducted to the Belen Sports Hall of Fame.  Mariano also was Regional Director for the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Code Enforcement Director for the City of Miami.

Those who have worked with him understand why Mariano is called “el cuarto bate.”  His dedication and contributions to Belen and the Alumni Association have been tremendous.  He has been at every Alumni and School event, giving of himself and even sacrificing his nights and weekends.  Mariano exemplifies what it is to be a Man for Others.  I have had the privilege of working side-by-side with Mariano.  He has been a coach and friend to me and all who have served our Alumni Association with him.  His commitment to our Association has left an indelible mark.

After nearly a decade, Mariano has decided that he would like to step down from the position of Executive Director to spend some well-deserved time with his family.  Our School and AlumniAssociation owe him a debt of gratitude.  On behalf of a grateful Alumni Association and all its members, ¡Gracias, Mariano!

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow.  Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
