On the heels of the program’s ninth state championship, the Miami-Dade County Office of the Mayor and Board of County Commissioners proclaimed December 5, 2017, Belen Jesuit High School Cross Country Team Day.
The proclamation was declared by County Commissioner Jose "Pepe" Diaz during the county commission meeting to the 10 students who represented Belen Jesuit and won the 3A State title on November 11.
“We are proud of the work our student athletes have put forth in attaining such success under the direction of their coaches and especially Head Coach Frankie Ruiz,” said Jose E. Roca, principal. “We are grateful to Jose “Pepe” Díaz and the County Commission for the proclamation today.”
Those present included Commissioner Xavier Suarez, Father Willie, Jose E. Roca, Athletic Director Carlos Barquin, Alumni Director Carlos Bravo and several parents of the students honored.
Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain. The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline. In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty. The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow. Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
