(The following is the presentation read to the student body during a special morning assembly on the one month anniversary of the attack at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.)

Good morning. Today marks one month since the tragedy in Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. As members of the larger community of South Florida we are called to remember not only what happened, but asked to think of how we will respond. So as a family, we respond by gathering in solidarity and remembering the victims and praying for their families. We begin in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.

Today we pray for each of the victims at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. I ask that you take a moment to reflect on their lives, families, and courage as their names are read:

1.     Alyssa Alhadeff
2.     Scott Beigel
3.    Martin Anguiano
4.     Nicholas Dworet
5.     Aaron Feis
6.     Jaime Guttenberg
7.     Chris Hixon
8.     Luke Hoyer
9.     Cara Loughran
10. Gina Montalto
11. Joaquin Oliver
12. Alaina Petty
13. Meadow Pollack
14. Helena Ramsay
15. Alex Schachter
16. Carmen Schentrup
17. Peter Wang

These seventeen students and teachers are victims of an unfortunate problem we continue to see in our country. We, as a school community, have a responsibility; a responsibility to support one school, a responsibility to ameliorate our relationships with each other, and a responsibility to remember that we are our brother’s keeper. In the midst of Ignatian week this is our opportunity to not only reflect on the tragedy, but to go out and make a positive difference in the world around us. We are all called to be men for others, we can be that here at Belen, with a simple act of kindness, a genuine greeting, or a random show of compassion.

We ask our Blessed Mother to help us in this as we pray the Hail Mary.

Our Lady of Belen… pray for us!

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow.  Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
