On April 27 and 28 the Belen Jesuit Crew team competed in the Florida Scholastic Rowing Association Sweep Championships in Sarasota. This annual competition pits the best youth teams in Florida, whether club teams or school teams, against each other to determine who will compete at a national level at Scholastics Finals on Memorial Day weekend in Philadelphia.
The Wolverines came away with a dominant performance, bringing home State Championship trophies for: the Scholastic Varsity 8+, the Scholastic Lightweight 8+, the Scholastic Lightweight 4+ and Overall Lightweight 4+, and the Scholastic Freshman 8+. Once all the points were tallied, the team also won the prestigious Men’s Scholastic State Championship for the second consecutive year.
“We are lucky to have such an extraordinary group of young men and involved families, with a supportive school administration,” said Head Coach Yunian Cabrera. “We’re looking forward to more strong showings in the upcoming regional and national competitions.”
Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain. The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline. In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty. The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow. Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
