On Saturday May 12, the Middle School Track and Field team competed in the FYRA State Championship at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. The team scored 50 points to win the state meet by one point over Calvary Christian Academy. Eighth grader Adam Magoulas ’22 led the team by finishing in first place in the 3,000 meter race. He also set the meet record with a time of 9:11. In addition to winning the 3,000, he scored in both the 1500 and 800 meter run.
“The team couldn’t have done it without the coaches. No one knows how hard they work for our benefit. I would like to thank in a special way Jose Garcia, Victor Arreita, Jose Roca Jr., Alberto Juantorena and Caros Jimenez for all they did this season,” said Adam Magoulas.
Gabriel Valladares ’22 contributed in a tremendous way to the victory by finishing in 3rd place in the shot put and 5th place in the discus. Other scoring members who contributed to winning the state championship were Ian Johnson ’22 in the shot put, Nicolas Souto ’22 in the pole vault and Tomas Duque ’22 in the 1500 meter run.
“I am very proud of all the hard work the team did throughout the season, and how their effort paid off in the biggest meet of the year,” said Head Coach Jose Garcia ’03.
Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain. The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline. In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty. The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow. Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
