The Campus Ministry team for the 2018-2019 academic year will feature a new lineup. As the new Director of Campus Ministry I’m very excited to take on this role after being three years at Belen Jesuit as a theology teacher and fifteen years in Catholic Education. Joining me is Mrs. Teresita Gonzalez, who comes to us after twenty years of service to the Archdiocese of Miami as Director of Amor en Accion. Her position is Coordinator of Community Service and Outreach. Back at Belen after a three year hiatus, is Jesuit Scholastic Michael Martinez ’09. He comes to us as part of his Jesuit formation and will be a trusted advisor, as well as a Senior Peer Ministry class teacher. Completing the team is School Chaplain Deacon Jorge Prieto '70, Mr. Asis Lopez ’07, as the Assistant Director of Campus Ministry, Mr. Jonathan Sanchez as the Director of Music Ministry and our Administrative Assistant Mrs. Zilkia Jimenez.
My team and I would like to express our deepest gratitude to Mr. Roberto “Arty” Artiz, who directed the efforts of Campus Ministry from 2015-2018, and now will be returning to the classroom as a member of the Theology department. We must also thank Mr. Francisco “Javi” Vasquez, who coordinated the community service efforts of our students from 2016-2018, and who is now coordinating our new testing center.
Campus Ministry has introduced the “Belen Men Pray the Rosary” campaign, in which students pray the rosary during each of our three lunch periods. On September 7, nearly eighty Belen Jesuit students from tenth to twelfth grades will be attending “Rock the Universe.” This is an annual festival of Christian music taking place at Universal Studios Theme Park in Orlando.
We are looking forward to coordinating many more activities and events that will help our students encounter Christ each and every day. For more information on our Campus Ministry program please email me at enewborn@belenjesuit.org or call the office at 786-621-4122.
Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain. The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline. In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty. The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow. Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
