Kino Border Initiative 2024

Teresa Martinez | Director of Communications
Seven students participated in the Kino Border Initiative mission trip to Nogales, Arizona, and Nogales, Sonora, Mexico, for four days from November 9 to 12. Through Kino, the students were exposed to the harsh realities of those living on the border between Mexico and America.

“Welcomed by the Jesuit community and the Hermanas de la Esperanza, the group learned from those living on both sides of the border, including pastoral agents, enforcement and migrants in the shelter in Mexico,” said Teresita Gonzalez, Christian Service Coordinator. “The trip is a powerful spiritual and educational journey in which they will serve through their actions and presence.”

From serving meals and playing with children at a shelter to hiking in the Arizona desert to exploring the life of ranchers on the border in Arivaca and learning about the struggles and plights of those migrating, the students had an unforgettable and profound experience.

“May the Lord give us the courage to create a kinder, more compassionate world, capable of holding a hopeful embrace for all those in need,” said Mrs. Gonzalez.

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow.  Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
