An Unforgettable Tombola
The Fr. Dorta-Duque, S.J. Memorial Tombola 2024 was the best yet! From the moment it all began on January 27 with the Culinary Extravaganza, you could already tell this year would be one to remember. This year’s Culinary Night Fever-themed event was a great night, from the food to the decoration to the dancing.
As students, employees, parents, alumni, and the community descended on the campus for Tombola weekend, February 2-4, the excitement was palpable, and everyone enjoyed a fun-filled weekend.
“There’s no greater event at Belen than Tombola,” said Fr. Willie ‘87. “I love everything about it. I love seeing our students with their parents, our seniors running around the fairgrounds helping where needed, alumni returning after maybe not seeing the campus for a while, and the food - well, don’t get me started. Tombola weekend is Belen at its best. Yes, we are having fun and helping over 20% of our current students by raising money for the Financial Assistance Program. Thank you to everyone who joined us and for always supporting Belen.”
This Tombola smashed fundraising records! We raised over $1,300,000 and the net proceeds will benefit the Financial Assistance Program.
The energy was pulsating through the midway like a lightning bolt. The screams, laughter, and cling clang of the rides created the perfect soundtrack for our campus, nearly as perfect as a Tombola mojito concocted by Mr. Orduñez or Mr. Martínez. The Campus Store was all the buzz and had its best-selling weekend ever. Fr. Willie even took the microphone to serenade the fairgoers with a medley of songs.
Belen traditions such as Tombola are not taken for granted. Alumni come in droves with their families, and parents work side by side with their sons. Lots of time and effort are put in by our maintenance and kitchen staff, faculty and staff, parent advisors and delegates, and the class of 2024, all with one purpose in mind… to ensure the best event and experience possible so we can offer a Jesuit education to many students who proudly call Belen Jesuit their second home.
“Tombola takes over six months to plan, but there is nothing like seeing the Belen Jesuit community come together to make amazing things happen,” said Mrs. Gigi Garcia-Chang, Tombola Coordinator. “Tombola is the epitome of a community event because none of this is possible without all of our parents, students, faculty, and staff. All that hard work and sacrifices are worth it when we see people having a great time on campus.”

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain. The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline. In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty. The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow. Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
