Proud to March for Life

Eric Lastres | Class of 2018
For most the lure to visit Washington, D.C. is to tour the beautiful museums, environment, or political atmosphere. However, I took a different approach when I, along with several of my classmates, decided to participate in the March for Life on January 25-29.
The March for Life is a pretty intimidating event because it entails hundreds of thousands of people standing up for our belief that life begins from the moment of conception and lasts until natural death. One doesn't really understand the magnitude of this event until you actually participate in it. Being a second year pilgrim, I thought I knew what to expect. However, every March for Life is different.

We had the opportunity to see Vice President Michael Pence speak to the American people about the right to life. Despite the heightened security, our mission was clear. We were there because we believe that "Hey, Ho, Roe v Wade has got to go!" We also believe that "We are the pro-life generation!" It was encouraging to be among my peers and to see so many people come together over a shared belief. In fact, I would say that this year’s crowd was among the largest.

It is easy to get caught up in the hype during the March for Life but the challenge is to keep the passion for the Respect Life movement ongoing. It is imperative that we remember the Respect Life movement continues each and every single day in our lives. We show our support by respecting others in our conversations, our actions, our love, our joy. Jesus said the greatest commandment is “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and all your mind. You shall love your neighbor as yourself." The way we respect life each and every day is by following that commandment. Our country will not change because one day a year the March for Life occurs, our country will change when we respect life each and every day.

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow.  Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
