Alumni Tour makes two stops in Florida

Phil Fernandez '94 | Executive Director of Advancement and Alumni Relations
With an emphasis in strengthening the brotherhood with alumni not in the South Florida area, Father Willie launched the “Alumni Tour” initiative in the fall of 2016.
The tour is reaching its end with one more stop, having already visited New York, Boston, Tallahassee, and Gainesville.

Each stop proved to be a great opportunity for alumni to learn more about the latest happenings at their alma mater, but more so, to learn about other alumni living in the area. Many times we found that alumni had no idea that the Belen connection extended to where they lived or even their profession. In fact, we have had many personal and business connections made throughout the tour.

These types of events help to further strengthen our alumni network which has already proven to be a valuable resource.  “So far in every stop we have had a lot of questions asked regarding the direction of the school and that has offered me a great opportunity to share my vision with my brothers,” said Fr. Willie.

Personally, I have enjoyed seeing the span of alumni representing various generations. From Jose Garcia-Bengochea from the class of 1945 to the recently graduated members of the class of 2016 and every decade in between. As an alumnus myself, to hear their stories and share like experiences was invaluable. Ultimately, it didn’t matter what year we graduated because we all shared a bond of brotherhood that couldn’t be denied.

The last stop of the academic year will be in Washington, D.C. on March 4th.  Any alumnus in the D.C. area is welcome to join us for mass and a reception. Please be sure to RSVP as soon as possible for this event by emailing mdemola@belenjesuit.org.

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow.  Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
