Spring Season At The ICA

Luis Dulzaides | Director of the Ignatian Center for the Arts
The Ignatian Center for the Arts is always bustling with a myriad of activities and accomplishments.
The weekend of President's Day the Belen Jesuit Speech and Debate team competed at the 43rd Harvard National Tournament.  The tournament brings together over 5,000 students on the campus of Harvard University for the largest invitational tournament of the year.  The team was led by Senior Kevin Lemus who placed in the Quarterfinal Round in Congressional Debate.  This gives Kevin three bids to the prestigious Tournament of Champions at the University of Kentucky in April.  Having an outstanding and historic tournament was the Public Forum team of Carlos Caballero and Miguel Walsh.  They placed 22nd in the tournament out of a field of 148 teams.  Carlos Caballero placed 14th in the individual speaker’s category in Public Forum.  He is the first Belen Jesuit Student to claim an individual speaker award in that category. Congratulations to them and the whole team for an outstanding tournament.  The team now prepares for the Varsity State tournament in Pensacola!

Ten years ago the “The Fantasticks” opened a new era of Musical Theatre at Belen Jesuit and 9 years ago we debuted our first version of “A Funny thing Happened on the way to the Forum”!  It seemed only fitting that on the tenth anniversary of the first major musical performed at Belen Jesuit that we bring back one of our most iconic shows!

“More Fun than walking around the Seven Hills of Rome! More fun than almost anything! Yes - It's "A Funny Thing Happened On the Way to the Forum" and it brings us “something familiar, something peculiar, something for everyone, a comedy tonight," said Francisco Padura, the show’s director. “It's a hilarious, outrageous and fun filled vaudevillian romp through Ancient Rome. Through a series of hilarious episodes involving mistaken identity, frantic chases, magic potions, long lost siblings, a mock funeral and the Cretan plague, Forum is an exhilarating rollercoaster ride filled with stunning surprises, cunning disguises, and a happy ending of course! So join us for a musical toga party of epic proportions, the perfect escape from our modern troubles!”

We are happy to have built a tremendous legacy of musical theatre at Belen Jesuit; this has only been possible with the dedication of so many people over the years!

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow.  Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
