65 Students to Build a Bridge in the D.R.

Mirna Menendez | BYM Coordinator
Sixty-five students from Belen Jesuit will travel to La Estancita in the Dominican Republic June 24 - July 2, 2017 to build a bridge for 5 communities.
The bridge will help over 130 families in the area. The Belen Youth Missions group will travel with Father Willie, Mr. Gehovanny Perez, and alumni to build the 100 feet long, 12 feet wide bridge over the Yujo River.

“When the river is low the villagers are able to either drive their cars to the other side or walk across a suspension bridge that has seen better days,” said Father Willie. “But, when the rainy season begins and the river is full or even overflowing, the villagers on one side of the river are stranded. On many occasions students aren’t able to reach their school and in emergencies people are unable to get to the hospital. The need for this bridge is evident and we look forward to being able to help them.”

In order to purchase all the needed supplies to accomplish the task in 9 days the BYM group needs to raise over $50,000. Each student has been tasked with raising at least $750 and has been provided with fundraising webpages to crowd source and reach or surpass his goal. Additionally, pizza slices are being sold every Wednesday during the first two lunch periods and on Friday during the last lunch period of the day. Mini-cakes, just in time for Mother’s Day, will also be sold out of the Campus Store from March 28 – April 11. Students are encouraged to pre-order the cakes for $10 each. Orders will be ready for pickup by May 10.

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow.  Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
