Assemblies held to discuss Destructive Decisions

Teresa Martinez | Director of Communications
Students in both the Middle School and High School heard presentations sponsored by Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) on March 22.
The purpose of the presentations was to provide information to students to deal with the issues of underage drinking, other drug use, impaired driving and other destructive decisions.

“It’s important to remind our young men of the consequences of making destructive decisions,” said Tommy de Quesada, Dean of Men. “Whenever we have the chance to provide speakers that can deliver powerful testimonials we act on it. We are very grateful to the presenters for sharing their stories and helping to open the eyes of our students.”

High School students heard from Helen Witty, Jenny Reyes, and Richard Doval from Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD). They asked 10 students from the audience to hold up posters of recent victims and shared each of their stories.  The stories varied from young drivers that made the decision to drink and drive who lost their lives to that of victims who died as a result of someone else’s decisions. Students listened attentively as they heard how easy it can be to get intoxicated and have your senses impaired.

Middle School students, on the other hand, heard from one of our football coaches – Mario Pino. He bravely shared his personal struggle with addiction and how hard he fought to overcome it. Mario was able to both showcase the dangers and consequences of starting a vice as a young man as well as how the difficult it is to overcome addiction.

“We’ve also put a visible reminder of the consequences of driving impaired in the center of our campus,” said de Quesada. “Parked in the center of the Garrido Family Plaza is a wrecked car that was involved in a fatality. This will serve as a reminder to our students, especially the older ones that will be going to prom soon, that this is a real threat and to be cautious.”

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow.  Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
