Award Season at the Ignatian Center

Over the last few weeks, our different programs have been working hard on their respective areas, and as usual have done an amazing job representing Belen Jesuit.
 
We are very proud of the members of Belen’s Troupe 4666 of the International Thespian Society and their performance at the State Thespian Festival March 15-19 in Tampa. Read more about their wins by clicking here.
 
Our musician’s excelled at the annual Disney Festival the weekend of March 25, 2017. The Jazz Band was rated Superior and the Concert Band was rated Excellent.  The Jazz Band was awarded a Silver Mickey for their excellent performance.  Senior Carlos Dominguez won a Best soloist award (Alto Saxophone).  Director Marlene Urbay was recognized by the Disney Festival for continued excellence in Music Education. Thanks to Ms. Urbay for her dedication and hard work and to all of the music teachers who work so hard to teach these young men!
 
The Speech and Debate team has been competing at the NSDA Speech and Debate National Qualifiers over the past six weeks.  The qualifiers bring together the best programs to send the top two students in each event to the National Tournament in June.  Congratulations to the following students who have qualified to participate at the National Tournament: Kevin Lemus, Dominic Abreu and Miguel Walsh in Congressional Debate.  Kevin Valido, Felipe Pardo, Javier Bustamante, Christopher Alvarez and Carlos Caballero in Extemporaneous and Informative Speaking.  Kevin Bjorkman, Julian De la Maza and Eduardo Gonzalez in World Schools Debate.
 
We now turn our attention to the end of the year celebrations which include the Spring Concerts and Art Exhibit. The Beginning Band will take the stage on Thursday, April 27 at 7 p.m. The Advanced Band will perform on Tuesday, May 9 also at 7 p.m.  Tickets are general admission and the concerts will be held at the Roca Theater.  The presale ticket price is $10.00 and once they become available to the general public $15.00 through the ICA Office or email mdelaroza@belenjesuit.org. Our artists will display their best works of art at an exhibit throughout April. The Artists Reception will be held on April 25 at 5 p.m. in the Saladrigas Gallery. The National Art Honors Society Induction Ceremony will take place following the reception from 6-9 p.m.

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow.  Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
