Hurricane Relief for the Florida Keys

Francisco J. Vazquez | Community Service and Outreach Coordinator
Once again, we are called to Run to the Fire and help our neighbors in the Florida Keys who were devastated by Hurricane Irma.
Thousands of people have been left homeless, without power or water and lacking the basic necessities. We are blessed to have been spared a direct hit, and most importantly, all those in our community are safe. Now that things are getting back to normal for us, we must turn our attention to those that won’t have the ability to go back to normal anytime soon.

Belen Jesuit will start a school wide collection beginning on September 19 to benefit the Basilica of St. Mary Star of the Sea. They have been serving the poor in the Keys for many years through their Stock Island mission and other outreach programs. Our goal is to help those hardest hit by this storm recover as quickly as possible. Drop off locations will be: the Campus Ministry office, the Main Office and the Administration Building lobby.

The list of suggested items is:
  • Landscaping gloves
  • Tarps
  • Canned meats and veggies
  • Heavy duty large garbage bags
  • Flashlights, lanterns, batteries
  • Mosquito repellant
  • Baby, toddler, and adult diapers
  • Hand wipes
  • Cleaning Supplies (Lysol cleaners, Clorox, mops, rags, buckets)
We will be collecting these items until Monday, September 25th. Together, we pray for all those affected by Hurricane Irma and we ask the Lord to guide and carry them through this most difficult time.

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow.  Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
