On September 26, Belen Jesuit’s Key Club began a schoolwide effort to raise funds for Hurricane Maria relief.
We were faced with a call for help and we heeded the call. With full force, we responded by mobilizing all parts of the Belen community to aid our brothers and sisters in Puerto Rico.
As a community, we raised over $25,000 to aid the Colegio San Ignacio in San Juan and those most in need. This would not have been achieved had it not been because of your individual contributions and a truly spectacular showing of generosity. At a time when there have been back-to-back disasters facing our country, we ran to the fire and did what we could to help.
I would like to thank the Spanish Department, the Belen Alumni Association and Campus Ministry for their collaboration and help. Additionally, Jesuit High School from Portland, Oregon joined our relief efforts to help those needing aid in Puerto Rico. Together, we are better, stronger, and able to accomplish so much – Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam.
I extend my deepest gratitude for the generosity portrayed by our entire community.
Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain. The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline. In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty. The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow. Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
