Parent Enrichment Series

Teresa Gutierrez, LMHC | Director of School Counseling
On February 23 the School Counseling Department hosted another installment of their Parent Enrichment Series.
The workshop was entitled: Marijuana: Weeding Out Fact from Fiction. The presentation was given by Ana Moreno, a psychotherapist, certified addiction specialist and Co-Founder of Family Recovery Specialists.

The presentation gave current information on the effects of marijuana use and how it has evolved over the years.  In addition, the benefits and dangers of marijuana's medical use and the different forms of medical marijuana were delineated.  The effects of its legalization in other states was presented using statistics from current research.  Ms. Moreno presented the topic in an engaging manner and was well received by an audience of grateful parents.  Ms. Moreno also provided practical ways to respond to many of the myths and misinformation that prevail about this drug.  There will be another installment of the Parent Enrichment Series coming in the month of April.

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow.  Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
