Nationals here we come

After an exhausting season, the Speech and Debate team will be representing Belen Jesuit at two national tournaments for the first time since 2014.
 
Sophomores Michael Mesa and Alexander Blanco will represent Belen at the National Catholic Forensic League Tournament in Duo Interpretation of Literature. The NCFL Tournament will be held May 26-27 in Washington, DC. The duo will give a presentation of a single selection of literature. Each performer may present one or more characters. The maximum length of the performance is ten minutes.
The National Speech and Debate Association (NSDA) Tournament will take place June 17-22 in Fort Lauderdale. Qualifying for the tournament are: Junior Dominic Abreu and sophomore Miguel Walsh in Congressional Debate, sophomores Alexander Blanco in Humorous Interp, Chris Alvarez in Informative, and Kevin Valido in Extemporaneous Speaking. Sophomores Kevin Bjorkman, Carlos Caballero and Julian de la Maza will be attending the tournament as part of the districts World Schools Debate team. The National Debate & Speech Tournament has been held across the country since 1931, and is the largest academic competition in the world. Each year, more than 3,500 high school students compete in a week-long competition to determine the most prestigious title in high school academics: national champion.

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow.  Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
